Join us in accelerating Sweden's climate transition
Climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our time, and the railway is one of the most powerful solutions we have. SJ is now making a historic investment of 19 billion to develop the future of train travel and shape a more sustainable transport system for future generations.
Do you want to be part of driving this development? SJ is now looking for a manager for the Competence Center within the Vehicle Division. The role is central to SJ's technical direction, sustainability efforts, and operational capability. Here you will lead experts, develop future vehicle solutions, and directly contribute to Sweden achieving its climate goals – while modernizing and strengthening one of the country's most important infrastructures.
Your upcoming role
As the manager of the Competence Center, you play a central role in leading, developing, and coordinating the expertise that ensures SJ's technical direction and capability in the vehicle area. The role combines strategic responsibility with practical leadership and close collaboration with both internal and external stakeholders. You will report to the Vehicle Director in the corporate management team.
In this role, you will be responsible for:
• Leading and developing a team of technical specialists and business developers who support SJ in railway systems, vehicle issues, and business development.
• Contributing to strategic priorities, decisions, and development initiatives in the division's management team.
• Ensuring quality, safety, and development in SJ's vehicle operations through clear working methods, governance, and technical direction.
• Driving development in areas such as digitalization, sustainability, energy efficiency, and future technical solutions.
• Representing SJ in collaborations and dialogues with, for example, the Swedish Transport Administration, suppliers, and other key players in the industry.
You will be part of SJ Vehicle Division, Sweden's most progressive vehicle unit and a leading player in the railway sector. The division is on a modernization and development journey with a focus on digitalization, sustainability, and cutting-edge technology. The mission is to ensure safe, secure, complete, and clean trains on time – with the customer and safety always in focus.
Expectations for the candidate we seek
You take responsibility for both people and operations and thrive in a role where strategy and operational work go hand in hand. In this recruitment, we place great emphasis on personal qualities, leadership ability, and suitability.
• Have experience leading qualified specialists and are accustomed to working in complex organizations with demands for structure, quality, and clear governance.
• Navigate effortlessly in both internal and external contexts with a business-oriented, collaborative, and communicative approach.
• Driven by development and improvement work and have the ability to inspire, motivate, and create engagement in teams and collaborations.
• Have a good ability to understand new industries and complex systems such as the railway system, as well as a genuine interest in sustainability issues.
Education
We are looking for someone with a relevant academic education, for example in engineering, urban planning, infrastructure, economics, or another area that provides a good understanding of complex technical and operationally critical systems.
Your main responsibilities
As the manager of the Competence Center, you have overall responsibility for leading, developing, and managing the operations. The role involves clear leadership responsibility, strategic direction, and an active contribution to the division's development.
You will be responsible for:
• Leading and developing the Competence Center's operations and employees, focusing on competence, direction, and quality.
• Participating in the division's management team and contributing to a high-performing, collaborative, and forward-leaning organization.
• Representing the division in vehicle-related matters and collaborations, both internally within SJ and externally with industry players, authorities, and partners.
The mission of the Competence Center
The Competence Center plays a central role in developing SJ's technical direction, safety, standards, and working methods in the vehicle area. The unit is responsible for driving development in areas such as energy efficiency, environment, electrical systems, ERTMS, GSM-R, and FRMCS, and ensuring that SJ complies with relevant norms, regulations, and standards. The Competence Center is also responsible for framework agreements with technical consultants and for the general vehicle-related governance documents required to create quality and uniformity in the organization.
The mission also includes monitoring the external environment and collaborating with the Swedish Transport Administration and other stakeholders on issues related to power supply, recovery, and infrastructure. The Competence Center drives systematic environmental work and sustainability reporting and is responsible for budget, forecasts, and invoicing for electricity for train operations. Additional parts of the mission include energy calculations, energy mapping, and developing action plans for energy efficiency as well as methodologies for valuing vehicles and components in insurance cases or sales.
